6 Basic Design Rules

Are you about to design your space and don’t know where to start? First of all, how exciting?! secondly, you are starting in the right place (here). Below you can find 6 simple rules that you should have in mind when designing your space. lets dive in!

Plan

Take your time planning your space and give yourself time to understand your style, your space, your needs and also be realistic with your budget. Focus on one room at it time, and keep track of every detail related to that room. When planning make sure to measure every inch of your room and also make a list of items you will need. Not only make a mood-board, but also take it with you when you go out shopping. This will help you decide if an item fits your overall design.

Furniture

Try to stay away from sets, instead mix and match furniture that complement each other. After all, you don’t want your space to look like a showroom. Pay attention to scale and the dimensions of your room.

Balance

Balance is really hard to explain, but in theory it’s very simple. When talking about visual balance you have to consider symmetry and asymmetry. To achieve balance in your room, play with not only with visual weight but also consider the juxtaposition between bright-dark, tall-short, feminine-masculine. A balance room feels completed and comfortable, while an unbalance room feels unfinished and weird.

Rug

A very common mistake I see a lot is having too small of a rug. Your furniture should always sit over your rug. In the living room your rug should go under your sofa not lest than 15cm and extend to the sides. For the bedroom your rug should extend to the front and sides and cover at lest 2/3 of your bed.

Curtains

Your curtains should always touch the floor, short curtains are a no-no. Hang your curtain rod as high as you can, and always extend your rod past your window; not only it will allow more light inside when the curtains are open, but this will also create a visual effect of taller ceiling and wider windows, and lets be honest thats all we want.

Artwork

Another common mistake I often see. I get it though, hanging art could be challenging at first, but the rules are simple. With single artwork always hang the center of the art at 150-170cm above the floor. When hanging over furniture leave a gap of 15-20cm above your furniture. If you want to install more than one frame leave a gap no bigger than 7-10cm.
